alterations and additions to a residence - completed 2012

during the construction phase for john and sallys project l had the occasional encounter with their western neighbour.. over the fence type discussions
stanley was always out his back yard digging holes or stacking bricks
and always happy to stop for a moment to engage in construction type conversation
their residence had a gaping hole in it's rear elevation that was covered over by a tarp that would constantly flap furiously in the wind
story was that they had commissioned a friend of theirs who was an architect to design a rear extension to their property
works had commenced and the back third of their residence had been demolished... by stanley of course.... when the architect had a health scare and was hospitalised
works stopped and stanley and marcelle being the good friends and loyal clients that they were decided to wait until their friend recovered before proceeding further
as although the works had begun there was still a lot of design and detail that needed to be added
l think when l first met stanley they had been camping on their site waiting for their architects return to health for about a year
when we were finally completing john and sally's a little over a year later stanley advised me that their architect was back and functioning but was so snowed down with work that he couldn't find the time to finish off their job
stanley and marcelle were both in their 70's
it didn't seem at all fair

at that point of time we were very busy with work, it was also a small project with a tight budget
l thought it would be a great project for a small emerging energetic practice
stanley and marcelle would make great eccentric clients
adventurous in their tastes they had a great modernist art and furniture collection
so l suggested l would pass their details on to a number of young architects we knew
which l did
but the project was to small for all that l contacted
when we started up multiplicity if any of our jobs even had a budget that was a bonus
don't get me started.....

so we took over the project
we bought to it the wonderful derek from brunswick builders who had just completed not in my backyard for us
derek is one of our preferred builders who is really comfortable in working with steel
this of course means that a lot of steel details start making their way into the design

colour also became an important design tool
colour is a wonderful thing
don't get me wrong ... you can say a lot with beige.... especially when you combine it with the latest trend off the designer catwalk
but you can say a lot more with colour
l suppose some people don't have a lot to say
but come to the party... get some colour into your life and into your home
you can always paint over it
