multiplicity is a design based architecture practice founded by co-directors interior designer sioux clark and architect tim o'sullivan-

our practice name has been chosen to convey that architecture and design as professional pursuits engulf a multiplicity of disciplines and that the successful resolution of a given brief as physically space requires the fullest utilisation of those disciplinesboth as individuals and directors of multiplicity we are committed to our careers as independent thinkers and individualistic designers, hopefully creating spaces and built forms that are intrinsically beautiful, highly useable, readily enjoyable, environmentally friendly and which contribute to the private endeavours and aspirations of our client/s and the public domain

‘… she sells seashells

by the seashore… '

it's an interesting process when a client becomes a close friend then becomes a client againjust prefacing…

a few years after we’d completed the renovation of gaby's home, gaby enquired of what we were doing come the christmas break
besides tidying up the office and finalising a few loose ends, the answer was not muchso she asked us to join her for new year’s eve at inverlochfor the tourists that's somewhere on the south-east coast of victoria

<img width="4032" height="3024" width_o="4032" height_o="3024" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/2900a0d182d5b63fed5246d788afaf2572b1fc58c176740c450b978e9299e044/IMG_0195.jpeg" data-mid="233755021" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/2900a0d182d5b63fed5246d788afaf2572b1fc58c176740c450b978e9299e044/IMG_0195.jpeg" />
obviously it was a great holiday because that set up a tradition that saw us celebrate new year’s in a peter mcintyre pole frame 80’s thing that was once owned by jack irish @ berembrokethen lorne, in a well to do melbourne architect's own home, and i’m not telling whose... and back to interloch, pretty much every new year after the firstunbeknown to us, gaby was hatching a plan
she would ultimately purchase a block of land on which she’d ask us to design her a beach houseso that we could continue our tradition without needing to rely on ensuring a place was available

<img width="8014" height="3772" width_o="8014" height_o="3772" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/c8c965b71660700d2e11b34c5e34df88afa8c2c11a1089d521bb985ea378e2e2/existing-site-3.jpg" data-mid="233755040" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/c8c965b71660700d2e11b34c5e34df88afa8c2c11a1089d521bb985ea378e2e2/existing-site-3.jpg" />
now one of the mistakes easily made is… when your architects are your friends, you think they know all your likes and dislikeslikewise, when you client is not only a return client but a friend, in some ways you presume to know what will work for them and what will notprior to writing this i got the old files out to do my due diligence
you’d expect nothing less of me i’m surei was hunting for the briefthe client’s ‘shopping list’unbelievably gaby’s brief was pretty much ‘i want a dog door’

…...that's not a brief that's more like a ‘remember to put the bins out‘ noteshe did however later add[ fly screens[ 3 bedrooms[ security door[ separate toilets[ fans[ heatingand a bath….

she didn’t get one, surely she must have changed her mind... but if she didn’t don’t tell her there was more, but not a lotbut i do love that the dog door was her main priority
<img width="3024" height="4032" width_o="3024" height_o="4032" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/b30e7a336ea3fe009e2fc281ca13f967a6be3e8e26c27b86984efd1c2f7b3909/IMG_5835.jpeg" data-mid="233759219" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/b30e7a336ea3fe009e2fc281ca13f967a6be3e8e26c27b86984efd1c2f7b3909/IMG_5835.jpeg" />
i’ve never known a client to put toilets on their briefi have always kinda taken that as a givenshe didn’t mention a kitchenwe threw one in anyhow
obviously we felt comfortable as we started sketching ideas straight awayall based around the dog door of coursethose sketches ended up as 7 schematic optionsi personally think it's a really important part of what we do as multiplicityi have banged on about this before, but that's not going to stop me doing it again

we use the schematic process to explore and test the brief, to evaluate what the site can cope with, and for what budgetthey are not just throw away ideas, they are &nbsp;rigorously explored within the time frame we have
looking back at these options l find myself thinking that nearly any of these would have worked fabulouslysometimes i think clients get caught-up in this search for an outcome that in some way represents in a built form, who they perceive themselves to bei think this way of seeing a home designed can get bogged down, overbearing, overthoughti’m all for giving to the idea of …. ‘what can we be?’i’m all for the idea of …let’s have fun designing this place
gaby initially went straight to option 1

<img width="3050" height="2154" width_o="3050" height_o="2154" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/eaf6c16e7bb8e5e8f6c226e3b968c76c2cc9d4604f8f0b0c0cca45b4f6c18d63/option-1.png" data-mid="233755149" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/eaf6c16e7bb8e5e8f6c226e3b968c76c2cc9d4604f8f0b0c0cca45b4f6c18d63/option-1.png" />
but then over a week or two swapped to option 5

<img width="3050" height="2154" width_o="3050" height_o="2154" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/11e80c43812ad0626b08f25ed3e1903dbcae1bb798062bc9bfdce63566e29034/option-5.png" data-mid="233755150" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/11e80c43812ad0626b08f25ed3e1903dbcae1bb798062bc9bfdce63566e29034/option-5.png" />
both good options, i mean, again, we wouldn’t put forward something we didn’t believe inbut 1 was more, let’s say adventurousbut no matter which option a given client goes for, our task is to flesh out every opportunity that that schematic plan has to offeryou know what i’m talking about… i’m talking decoryep decor!much maligned but never out of the pictureand decor is a far wider topic than shows like 'the block' would have you believeso off we trotted in pursuit of option 5as the site sloped each option looked to embrace that from a different perspective

<img width="4408" height="2480" width_o="4408" height_o="2480" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/2782f0327cdce5deecdab4a2c0b17227f43cde995e7c19c4776b9bcd463ed83d/00_9814-resnew_she-sells-sea-shells_multiplicity_trevor-mein.jpg" data-mid="233752997" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/2782f0327cdce5deecdab4a2c0b17227f43cde995e7c19c4776b9bcd463ed83d/00_9814-resnew_she-sells-sea-shells_multiplicity_trevor-mein.jpg" />
option 5 started at the high street address of the site and sat level so that by the back of the building there was ample height beneath to utilise as covered parkingso much so that soon the brief was expanded with the introduction of a ping pong table in the underbelly of the building next to the car this then quickly became enclosed it became a rumpus room… with a ping pong tablean entry was added then the roof deck arrivedgaby claims that was our doingwe claim it was at her request and we swear we have proof...then rumpus room disappearedbut the deck remained
<img width="3720" height="2480" width_o="3720" height_o="2480" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/55e202a24b66e142886210021df5224a896601dcb3efdb198b91f9c86a02fbc3/09_9814-resnew_she-sells-sea-shells_multiplicity_trevor-mein.jpg" data-mid="233753003" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/55e202a24b66e142886210021df5224a896601dcb3efdb198b91f9c86a02fbc3/09_9814-resnew_she-sells-sea-shells_multiplicity_trevor-mein.jpg" />i’m rambling aren’t ii need to get back on topicso anyway both we and gaby were interested in creating a modern architectural interpretation of the classic australian beach housewith a couple of refinements of coursethe bedrooms are all smallonly one has an ensuitethe second bedroom and the bunk bedroom share a bathroomomg!

<img width="2480" height="3720" width_o="2480" height_o="3720" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/d261812914b26333bc6f9ac137fbea8008763a7800297c9ea99c2469077a09e7/07_9859-interior_she-sells-sea-shells_multiplicity_trevor-mein.jpg" data-mid="233754630" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/d261812914b26333bc6f9ac137fbea8008763a7800297c9ea99c2469077a09e7/07_9859-interior_she-sells-sea-shells_multiplicity_trevor-mein.jpg" />
apparently gaby had friends that initially told her that they wouldn’t want to stay over if they’d have to share a bathroomseems that now it's built…. it's not such an issue after allthe kitchen is the heart of the building

<img width="4358" height="2480" width_o="4358" height_o="2480" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/915ba7b69560fd9b47664290b6777ed3af211acd18a8cb8217551ccbc9d05d72/03_9859-interior_she-sells-sea-shells_multiplicity_trevor-mein.jpg" data-mid="233754691" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/915ba7b69560fd9b47664290b6777ed3af211acd18a8cb8217551ccbc9d05d72/03_9859-interior_she-sells-sea-shells_multiplicity_trevor-mein.jpg" />
the living small but inclusive and interactive with the street as requested
just to put this all in perspective, we designed ‘she sells seashells' about the same time we designed ‘the backyard goes on forever’as such we were exploring the possibilities that a corridor could provideseashells is a series of spaces all hung from a wide east to west corridorone long mother of a corridor that provides a series of spaces, benches where one can prop away, from the kitchen dining or living and chat, read or just linger

<img width="2480" height="3720" width_o="2480" height_o="3720" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/f99f29e9b886209eb4f8e201c86e1e8567588bde1bcdf09fabbd8dad21e4efca/05_9859-interior_she-sells-sea-shells_multiplicity_trevor-mein.jpg" data-mid="233754689" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/f99f29e9b886209eb4f8e201c86e1e8567588bde1bcdf09fabbd8dad21e4efca/05_9859-interior_she-sells-sea-shells_multiplicity_trevor-mein.jpg" />
loiter is another version of lingersioux lingers i loiter
you arrive in your car at the lower west end of the block complete with luggage, and food hampers, and head up the southern staircase to arrive - at the corridor of coursefrom that point you forget the carwhile the house is orientated to the north, the corridor axis constantly points you towards the beach trail
it’s directing you to the beach
go for a walk or go for a swim it's within walking distance
why?

because it's a beach houseit's all about going to the beach
returning from the beach
stuffing beach stuff somewhere
getting into the sungetting out of the sun

<img width="3720" height="2480" width_o="3720" height_o="2480" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/69b2b28ffec59e24ebf73b5a255b9c3617fd99f6da333a7588f16f8a54bdc7c8/03_9814-resnew_she-sells-sea-shells_multiplicity_trevor-mein.jpg" data-mid="233755152" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/69b2b28ffec59e24ebf73b5a255b9c3617fd99f6da333a7588f16f8a54bdc7c8/03_9814-resnew_she-sells-sea-shells_multiplicity_trevor-mein.jpg" />having a spot to set up the BBQ

a spot to have a quite beer listening to the sounds of summer, the roll of the surf in the distancehaving a g&amp;t and watching the sun disappearinterestingly i write all this when the reality is that gaby, sioux and i probably love the beach more in winter than summerno one's aroundyou need to rug-up the beach is deserted when the surf is so ferocious that it doesn’t temp you, it threatens youyou come back the house to shelter, to get the fire going and watch freo vs tigers and scream, laugh and eat cheese

<img width="1365" height="2048" width_o="1365" height_o="2048" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/9d2f190fc8c5899e548ee070729ef7dc6f5eb2a580fdda2661b55de9861a5cd1/m3440_7034_Trevor-Mein-2025.jpg" data-mid="233755192" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/9d2f190fc8c5899e548ee070729ef7dc6f5eb2a580fdda2661b55de9861a5cd1/m3440_7034_Trevor-Mein-2025.jpg" />so into the design aesthetic we introduced the unexpecteda shell encrusted mirrored vanity cabinet, designed to be hung from the ceiling…with a note to the builder imbedded on the contract drawings; ‘cabinet J-06 to be covered in shells by the architects’‘joiner to allow to fit cabinet then take down, remove mirrored door to allow for this to happen’which they did!
<img width="2480" height="3720" width_o="2480" height_o="3720" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/2d31826d7f411b7328290f7e6b2c3392a458ce284e2ed108fbfc2bf8b62c0cf1/09_9859-interior_she-sells-sea-shells_multiplicity_trevor-mein.jpg" data-mid="233754710" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/2d31826d7f411b7328290f7e6b2c3392a458ce284e2ed108fbfc2bf8b62c0cf1/09_9859-interior_she-sells-sea-shells_multiplicity_trevor-mein.jpg" />next we purchased a resin clam shell from freedom furniture or somewhere similarpresented it to the builder and said ‘why can’t this become our vanity sink?’he foolishly didn’t say ‘no….because it has no plug or plumbing of any sort’ ‘it's an ornament not a vanity sink’he said 'no problem'though we knew it wasbut no other resin clam shell looks so very much at homethank you david!
with gaby’s first renovation project ‘gaby gaby hey’, instead of ripping up and turfing the colourful 1970’s carpet that graced much of that old homes floors, we reinvented it as wall lining this had been a great success and gaby was keen for us to look at something similar for aireys
it just so happened that a friend of hers was ripping up old carpet from a small unit in st kildaand so we inherited numerous rolls of 70’s brown carpet…the building hadn’t even been documented and we already had the living room walls finish sortedsioux our interior decor specialist, declared this brown splurgy carpet was the goods, and would use it as a touchstone to work all other finishes and materials off

<img width="3720" height="2092" width_o="3720" height_o="2092" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/2b3cfc4f1073a71457be016efca85865315dcaf4b6e0098b7e76ba1dbc1b3789/00_9859-interior_she-sells-sea-shells_multiplicity_trevor-mein.jpg" data-mid="233754935" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/2b3cfc4f1073a71457be016efca85865315dcaf4b6e0098b7e76ba1dbc1b3789/00_9859-interior_she-sells-sea-shells_multiplicity_trevor-mein.jpg" />this of course leads to another connectiontash, the project architect for seashells, father was the legendary bill wheatland who worked alongside utzon on the documentation of that very icon of opera houseseverything they say is cyclical...the next material finish chosen was a product called woodwool, a panel made from bonded timber fibresit’s an interesting 70’s looking kind of ceiling panel, designed to drop into a suspended ceiling gridthat though would be too easy why not use it for wall panelling?this was an idea spotted in a neil cownie projectwe are always happy to pilfer from other architects workand he was so very helpfulthanks

we’d had had exhaustive discussions with gaby about the built structure based on projected time frames coming out of covid, versus building costs, preferred materials and the local vernacular…we resolved to go with a framed structure, one with 140mm deep stud walls to get maximum insulative performancechoice of external cladding had again bounced back and forth, from timber board, to galvanised sheets but ultimately landed at predominantly compressed cement sheet, with a brick feature wall to the living room

<img width="3720" height="2480" width_o="3720" height_o="2480" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/22cfac09e9ba290df9c082f9cfb84d2a40e95f5a9e3738c0a2c5711d416b5640/07_9814-resnew_she-sells-sea-shells_multiplicity_trevor-mein.jpg" data-mid="233754965" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/22cfac09e9ba290df9c082f9cfb84d2a40e95f5a9e3738c0a2c5711d416b5640/07_9814-resnew_she-sells-sea-shells_multiplicity_trevor-mein.jpg" />
the intention is for that feature wall to wrap down onto the floor… and to re-occur as a hovering brick bench seat, fireplace plinththose same bricks we also had cut into tiles, to become the hearth to the living space and all wet areas
we then played the robust nature of the brick, &nbsp;against cork tiles for the rest of the flooringsoftness and warmth underfoot perfect for bare feet still drenched in sandor, as more likely... sandy paws
the final piece of 'decor magic’ was introduced due to the need to visually shield the neighbours from the exterior stairs up to the roof deck

<img width="2480" height="3720" width_o="2480" height_o="3720" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/eb9326f123510c96c01015b9744503b8a37522d04bee1982168e0d8bd0d8084e/05_9814-resnew_she-sells-sea-shells_multiplicity_trevor-mein.jpg" data-mid="233754968" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/eb9326f123510c96c01015b9744503b8a37522d04bee1982168e0d8bd0d8084e/05_9814-resnew_she-sells-sea-shells_multiplicity_trevor-mein.jpg" />it is a known fact that actually sighting a neighbour from one’s house is detrimental to one’s mental health and well being that all efforts must be taken to ensure that one never spots a neighbour under any circumstances
it's what binds this great country togethernot having to look at one’s neighbours
we ran with a menthol-green fibreglass grid panel usually used as industrial walkway platforms, called FRPwe more than ran with it, we sprinted all the way down the hallway with it!it became the municipally required, un-neighbourly / neighbourly screening device

<img width="3720" height="2480" width_o="3720" height_o="2480" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/0c964589882577e62b17562e79e819c298b9b39a9822cf4b0dc4e8e066f1c2e8/02_9814-resnew_she-sells-sea-shells_multiplicity_trevor-mein.jpg" data-mid="233754970" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/0c964589882577e62b17562e79e819c298b9b39a9822cf4b0dc4e8e066f1c2e8/02_9814-resnew_she-sells-sea-shells_multiplicity_trevor-mein.jpg" />
it became a privacy initiative as neededit became roof deck seating and balustrade finally it also found its way into the building, as a veil or screen to our somewhat public bathroom vanity, to become a bench seat to the shower, to soap trays, a bedside table and more

<img width="2480" height="3720" width_o="2480" height_o="3720" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/8ec96cbd5f15a107e236065520605d46df5909bd48ff747749352aeeb56832f6/m3440_7146_Trevor-Mein-2025.jpg" data-mid="233755197" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/8ec96cbd5f15a107e236065520605d46df5909bd48ff747749352aeeb56832f6/m3440_7146_Trevor-Mein-2025.jpg" />
finally a couple of decor footnotes

though it may not sound like it...we were as always looking to create a cohesive interiorwhile at the same time wanting / needing that sense of wholeness to fray a little at the edgesit is a beach house after allso in bedroom 1 and 3 we went out there on a little tangent with respect to the bedheadsbed 1 being a semblance of old cupboard doors, salvaged by us many years back

<img width="3720" height="2480" width_o="3720" height_o="2480" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/f1edf54814a8b1149b5e430d7c961a86f99709bb0aa25ef3e201afa661df8f56/m3440_7737_Trevor-Mein-2025.jpg" data-mid="233755014" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/f1edf54814a8b1149b5e430d7c961a86f99709bb0aa25ef3e201afa661df8f56/m3440_7737_Trevor-Mein-2025.jpg" />
they had been waiting, looking for a home and gaby responded to the ad hoc rhythmical nature of their presenceis there an off hand nod to six degrees?…. yeah probably...in bed 3, well l happened to have &nbsp;a collection of old drawing boards

<img width="3720" height="2480" width_o="3720" height_o="2480" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/3ff389c048220d0e80a72aa437b497427d943c17749d1b95eb9defffce2878a2/08_9859-interior_she-sells-sea-shells_multiplicity_trevor-mein.jpg" data-mid="233753005" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/3ff389c048220d0e80a72aa437b497427d943c17749d1b95eb9defffce2878a2/08_9859-interior_she-sells-sea-shells_multiplicity_trevor-mein.jpg" />one being the first board i ever purchased as a 4th year architecture student so, along with a couple of those once omni-present beautiful green linoleum topped boards, replete with pin marks, drops of ink… a history of architectural drawings hidden within their DNAthey all got sliced together, banded to a steel plate shelf and up lit from behindbingoa bedhead
a big thank you to our client, our mob, our builder, his trades, our landscaper, our engineer, the building surveyor, rudy and team from staircare, etc., etc., ad infinitum as it takes a cast of thousands to make a building... and to chippy, lucy and maggieand in loving memory of archie… the wonder dog that’s all folks!

2025 houses awards shortlist [apartment or unit]

a refit of a 24th floor apartment in an iconic melbourne building, ‘the republic’originally designed by FK architects in the 90’s, it is instantly recognisable holding its corner site with its pointed prows facing north and south
its materiality is pared-back, consisting of well detailed concrete and glass and it is this simplicity that gives the building and therefore the form of the respective apartments a sense of timelessnessthat being said the interiors themselves were ‘as of their time’ with flourishes of slumped glass and marble that to our mind spoke more about a hotel experience, generic and essentially without any personalisation as opposed to a home
enter our two very personable clients, back from several years overseasshocked that their place in the sky was losing views as the city pushed in around themthe question became whether to personalise their apartment to suit their now needs, or move to a low rise way of life

our clients’ brief was ‘we only need two bedrooms, we love to cook - see what you can do’

to enliven the space and convince us to stay

a budget was set, with our response being to focus on materiality and formto reflect what light and views remained, as well as to animate the flow and habitation of the interior

<img width="4500" height="3016" width_o="4500" height_o="3016" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/f47fefa4955b4f76808d7ea44c5ba5125d5037eef5597f340fc212a66747bcc4/14_EC250101_ECP2105_HOUSES_RGB.jpg" data-mid="233755858" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/f47fefa4955b4f76808d7ea44c5ba5125d5037eef5597f340fc212a66747bcc4/14_EC250101_ECP2105_HOUSES_RGB.jpg" />

our response was to reflect what light and views remained, as well as to animate the flow and form of the interior essentially to work with the curvature of nonda’s original, but to take it further – to use the original bathroom forms to separate, and redirect the experience of living at this place

taking our lead from the original curved elements within the floorplan, given they housed principal services, our decision was to re-interpret and reorientate those curvesusing their form to reflect back on themselves with the materiality of the interior echoing the dynamic city at their feet, the space is both enlivened and calming

surfaces bleed into each other

<img width="4500" height="3028" width_o="4500" height_o="3028" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/06cdcda6859cb979a0a3d31850c90c20c0eeb65a0e7e5c6f87d0300d60d23df6/1_EC250101_ECP1882_HOUSES_RGB.jpg" data-mid="233755834" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/06cdcda6859cb979a0a3d31850c90c20c0eeb65a0e7e5c6f87d0300d60d23df6/1_EC250101_ECP1882_HOUSES_RGB.jpg" />
the softness of burnished stainless, concrete floor, a polished aluminium wall, mirrors, raw black steel, translucent danpal, clear and coloured acrylic and curved tiled surfaces enlarging the overall sense of spacethese hard surfaces are attenuated by carpeted bedrooms, upholstery and woodwool ceilings, along with a reduced colour palette allowing space for the owner/s personality dare we say, to shine

the design allows for this within an audibly cocooned environment with woodwool ceilings and carpeted bedrooms softening the otherwise functional hard surfaces

the [back]yard goes on foreveralterations&amp;additionscompleted december 2022
where do we start
at the beginning of course
“vicky, clinton, cecil and a record collection”
that kind of sums up the brief

kind of sums up their attitude to the whole architect renovation build process thinking about it now
vicky, clinton, cecil and a record collection
of course they weren’t quite so initially upfront about their various collections
but eventually their wine collection entered the fray

one thing that stays with me from this project was the phrase; “we like what you do… you decide”

god love them

a whole manner of questions
“what sort of taps would you like?”
“you decide!”

somewhere there should be a statue

depicting vicky, clinton, cecil and their fabulous record collection

<img width="2000" height="1350" width_o="2000" height_o="1350" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/9bcbb2acacc8ef6b02289b467563c8c3bbb76ed89bdc2161d7e26a4993fecc2a/EC231201_ECP5667_web.jpg" data-mid="221803709" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/9bcbb2acacc8ef6b02289b467563c8c3bbb76ed89bdc2161d7e26a4993fecc2a/EC231201_ECP5667_web.jpg" />

they had bought a simple but quite beautiful early victorian timber home that came with... well let’s just say it, a 1970’s disaster attached
that in turn had been even further decimated by someone in the early noughties probably intending a quick turnover

but a wonderful backyard

as the legendary ed keupper once penned, “the yard goes on forever”
so did this one

with a various collection of fruit bearing trees of decent age
you’d wander through these fruit bearing beautifies for half an hour before you’d hit the back fence

i’m exaggerating a tad bit but it just adds to the drama of it all

<img width="1340" height="2000" width_o="1340" height_o="2000" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/be6ec673579582c249ae695ed2eccdeb05835b453523f24c79e67edc7896279e/EC231201_ECP5332_web.jpg" data-mid="221803748" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/be6ec673579582c249ae695ed2eccdeb05835b453523f24c79e67edc7896279e/EC231201_ECP5332_web.jpg" />

their aim was reasonably universal

3 bedrooms
ensuite and a main bath
living, dining, kitchen… big kitchen to make mess in
space, light

and somewhere to store their record collection

we presented 8 design options

they went with option 7

well why wouldn’t you
it’s a lucky number the number 7
from that initial sketched schematic design to the finished product, it hardly changed
hardly changed, but certainly developed

now when l was a fresh faced student studying at w.a.i.t. in bentley w.a, something that was drummed into me by the astute tutors was “corridors are bad… always reduce corridors, corridors are a waste of space… oh my god is that a corridor???? fail!!!!”

but you gotta love a good corridor don’t you
corridors are where you bump into people

jona lewis suggested that you’d always find him in the kitchen at parties

i always ended up in the corridor

with dozens of others

all of us drunk and happy to be in that corridor with all these other happy drunk people

obviously people love corridors

only lecturers and tutors of architecture despise them

the rest of us… corridors… bring them on

<img width="2000" height="1336" width_o="2000" height_o="1336" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/27b4f4d1c313a5888aa9eb604a671299dad2537f4800b887f9e6a676a95c2e72/EC231201_ECP5043_web.jpg" data-mid="221803710" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/27b4f4d1c313a5888aa9eb604a671299dad2537f4800b887f9e6a676a95c2e72/EC231201_ECP5043_web.jpg" />

so the chosen design… it is really a celebration of the corridor

it embraces the traditional front door central to the facade opening on to the central corridor which leads into the house
the corridor is the spine of the building

we removed the 70’s disaster …. why, so we could continue the corridor of course

the corridor leads to everything

the corridor is like a tree trunk off which both internal and external spaces hang like branches
it allowed us to stretch the whole building so we could embrace the depth of the backyard
where there was an old fruit tree we left a courtyard and the corridor provided a bench seat and large sliders to open onto the court

this corridor made you travel

it gave you no option

all the bedrooms located in the front original weatherboard
in the centre, courtyards, the bathroom, a study nook, a record collection, a meeting bench, a laundry...

and all the dining &amp; living spaces out the back

vicky and clinton had spent a stint in port fairy, before that, portland - prior to buying in geelong anyway

besides admiring what we had done with drifthouse in port fairy, they held in high esteem the stamina and determination of john and colleen [owners of drifthouse as well &nbsp;as homeowner clients of our “marvellous what a difference milo makes” project]

ultimately i think because john and colleen had used us… well that was more than good enough for vicky, clinton, cecil and their record collection

there was a country feel to them as clients

can’t help it… when i think country… i think sheds

wool sheds, wood sheds, shearing sheds, storage sheds and engineering sheds... anything corrugated and slightly raised off the ground

<img width="2002" height="3000" width_o="2002" height_o="3000" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/422609206bb33eb1db58eea3cae668f624c2f8b443770dca8d25a2ee68c2d272/EC231201_ECP4999_Hi_Res_RGB-copy.jpg" data-mid="221806506" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/422609206bb33eb1db58eea3cae668f624c2f8b443770dca8d25a2ee68c2d272/EC231201_ECP4999_Hi_Res_RGB-copy.jpg" />

that thinking dictated the approach to our materiality and finishing

that helped our bottom line as we were very open to practical everyday materials as well as the texture, patina, and sense of memory contained within recycled and found materials

during demo as layers of plaster were coming off the walls, this response was reinforced as we discovered old rough cut timber lining boards as well as hessian lining hidden under the plaster

the art is to tie all these materials together

so that many elements come together to feel as a whole
in that respect the corridor came into its own
allowing the layering of materials to unfold and to represent themselves in a different form, a different usage

in the main ensuite where we discovered the old rough cut timber lining boards we really embraced and retained them

<img width="1344" height="2000" width_o="1344" height_o="2000" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/9afddad10f1bf6da5e5df5df7230a6354d4a9f2e861dcd11006b365e202592d0/EC231201_ECP5368_web.jpg" data-mid="221806471" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/9afddad10f1bf6da5e5df5df7230a6354d4a9f2e861dcd11006b365e202592d0/EC231201_ECP5368_web.jpg" />

the hessian we removed but then re introduced by wrapping 3 large sliding doors in hessian

of course finding any artisan with the skills and know how of working with a material used a century ago wasn’t difficult

not when you’ve got cimone and myself sitting around looking for a side project

in the new section of the build we used bracing ply with exposed manual fixings to reinforce this earthy textural rural feel
we counterbalanced these earthy tactile elements by using exuberant marbles, full walls of colourful tiles, cantilevering kitchen benches...

<img width="3000" height="2007" width_o="3000" height_o="2007" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/1079e4ccb58691c20499352905e60d848dac2922e1ecde1ef4ea9f5ff871de11/EC231201_ECP5431_Hi_Res_RGB_cropped.jpg" data-mid="221806549" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/1079e4ccb58691c20499352905e60d848dac2922e1ecde1ef4ea9f5ff871de11/EC231201_ECP5431_Hi_Res_RGB_cropped.jpg" />

the bathroom has a second hand green enamel 1950’s bathtub…. $200 off facebook marketplace and just around the corner from the site

as architects of course we reinvented it by designing in supports so that it appears to hover

<img width="1338" height="2000" width_o="1338" height_o="2000" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/6123ef594be468e8992c21ffc25ad89bdaf6d8fb85b70a89dad91feb32ecc6cc/EC231201_ECP5052_web.jpg" data-mid="221806491" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/6123ef594be468e8992c21ffc25ad89bdaf6d8fb85b70a89dad91feb32ecc6cc/EC231201_ECP5052_web.jpg" />

we trick the senses into coming alive…. in a very relaxed casual sort of way

and if that’s not enough for you … we threw in a bright green exposed steel truss just for good measure

the 100-year-old orange tree sitting in the kitchen courtyard, well it’s not a 100 percent happy about its treatment from the roof plumbers... but who is nowadays

but it’s still hanging in there and still bearing fruit all the same

a bit like multiplicity one might suggest

a big thanks to our wonderful clients

not to mention their wine collection

to maria, pete and gaz from mathersons construction group
vincent yeap our engineer

and last but by no means least ryan the wonder painter

2022 aia [victorian chapter] award commendation [residential architecture - houses [new]]

a throw away comment by one half of our clients, a gentleman in his late 70’s and an artist of national if not international&nbsp;standing, that he’d never had a house designed for him, for them, a home... resonated with us

his excitement and expectation of the possibilities was palpable

as was the gentle understanding that time to experience this home was not open ended

it reinforced the precious opportunity a client gifts their architect

another inciteful ‘thought out loud’ moment was that the building should be designed such that it could be embraced by the&nbsp;neighbourhood

our role was to gift the community a beautiful building

given a triangular site bounded on two sides by pedestrian traffic, this makes for pleasing a lot of people

<img width="4500" height="3000" width_o="4500" height_o="3000" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/f1c68f7b35907499489f336c725404af267f96d0bf3ed37a39b1764bac9155b6/m3344a_1499_Trevor-Mein-2022-copy.jpg" data-mid="137277255" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/f1c68f7b35907499489f336c725404af267f96d0bf3ed37a39b1764bac9155b6/m3344a_1499_Trevor-Mein-2022-copy.jpg" />

<img width="2000" height="3000" width_o="2000" height_o="3000" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/25a46f0d5524c7c5a573706cfa0b4f42cfe1d85d4df465bdfa326adecd63ecd7/m3344b_0595_Trevor-Mein-2022-copy.jpg" data-mid="137273562" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/25a46f0d5524c7c5a573706cfa0b4f42cfe1d85d4df465bdfa326adecd63ecd7/m3344b_0595_Trevor-Mein-2022-copy.jpg" />

then we have a not insubstantial brief for a not insubstantial home including basement, lift, carstacker and separate studio

this then brings us to the very disparate personal tastes of our clients

one likes high volumes

one likes intimate volumes

one is a minimalist

the other a collector of things… natural, textured, patina, a love of objects with history, the scratches, and bruises of a past

<img width="4500" height="3000" width_o="4500" height_o="3000" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/cf6e091b7d9b7fa8652bf54e379bc5486912f96041d4912f0e4e243eb5218fa9/m3344b_0110_Trevor-Mein-2022-copy.jpg" data-mid="137276462" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/cf6e091b7d9b7fa8652bf54e379bc5486912f96041d4912f0e4e243eb5218fa9/m3344b_0110_Trevor-Mein-2022-copy.jpg" />

with both wanting an abundance of natural light, while loving the play of shadow

wanting the inside to seamlessly shift to the outside while remaining private to the teams of passers by

and we have the trophies of a well lived life

the books, the art, the furniture, the collections, the objects, the records, the dog, the visiting family, the pots, the pans, the l&nbsp;can’t throw this away, the heirlooms, the trophies

all needing a space, a home

<img width="4500" height="3000" width_o="4500" height_o="3000" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/33206679ace5e324bd99482819b4c7874287f17a27e3db7a0831fabafadc14ef/m3344a_6462_Trevor-Mein-2022-copy.jpg" data-mid="137276498" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/33206679ace5e324bd99482819b4c7874287f17a27e3db7a0831fabafadc14ef/m3344a_6462_Trevor-Mein-2022-copy.jpg" />

all this on an awkward block… with height restrictions and a flood level for good measure

backing onto a park filled with substantial gums and rowdy galahs

knowing that site and program were not the greatest of bedfellows, we chose our consultants carefully

a builder not afraid of detail, materiality, or tight sites

<img width="2000" height="3000" width_o="2000" height_o="3000" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/259ba635eb2ca0d6c158ad6263e1e550b903f23a2abc5ffafd75579969312ea8/m3344b_0376_Trevor-Mein-2022-copy.jpg" data-mid="137276720" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/259ba635eb2ca0d6c158ad6263e1e550b903f23a2abc5ffafd75579969312ea8/m3344b_0376_Trevor-Mein-2022-copy.jpg" />

an engineer who would work closely with uswe discussed the landscaping from the very outset of the projectwe measured and catalogued the entire list of the client’s objects

as is usual the plan works hard to resolve our constraints
to provide privacy from the passing parade, while presenting a generous, homely aesthetic on all sides

responding to and borrowing fro

creating vistas from room to room over fledgling landscaped spaces

the built form responds directly to place

and the materiality which quietly mimics the colour and textures of parkland to its northern flank, is carried through&nbsp;internally

<img width="2000" height="3000" width_o="2000" height_o="3000" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/eadaad1b7aec284da2300c1d0dc60c545142b7c33d032531066a9f49ae7b546b/m3344b_7004_Trevor-Mein-2022-copy.jpg" data-mid="137277354" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/eadaad1b7aec284da2300c1d0dc60c545142b7c33d032531066a9f49ae7b546b/m3344b_7004_Trevor-Mein-2022-copy.jpg" />

and the tall / small thing…. well, we played with height throughout

using coffered ceilings to the primary living spaces to mediate the expectations of both clients

from a corner of the room, one registers the bottom of the coffers, giving a cosy, intimate feel

moving through the room the height of the ceiling becomes apparent… problem solved

we should be so luckyrenovations to existing residencecompleted feburary 2022

this little house originally designed by architect david luck, is a well-recognised, iconic part of its urban streetscapehowever despite being less than 10 years old the exterior required considerable remediation for it to shine into the future, and the interior reworked to eradicate builderly faults and fulfil our client’s needs

our philosophy when either renovating or adapting architecture for re-use is to re-purpose what we can

we are respectful of what is good and analytical of what can be made of what is there, intervening decisively and of our time as/where needed

that said architecture always predates a renovation

<img width="2000" height="1336" width_o="2000" height_o="1336" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/46f97cf96884d1b3d08037a1e4f7db31c76d5e217720e92c69954cd1b6449a30/11_lucky_multiplicity_EmmaCrossPhotographer.jpg-copy.jpg" data-mid="137283448" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/46f97cf96884d1b3d08037a1e4f7db31c76d5e217720e92c69954cd1b6449a30/11_lucky_multiplicity_EmmaCrossPhotographer.jpg-copy.jpg" />

we have worked on many significant projects by the contemporaries of william wardell and the likes of henry bastow, anatol kagan, roy grounds, robert grace et al

but never someone we know personally…

david luck is a friend and a wonderful architect

we contacted him of course and he wasn’t overly concerned about what we might do, even suggesting we pull it down and start again

given the relative newness of the projects and its brilliant concept to add greenery to the street, our role we felt was to make good, let it be its best representation of self and to layer the original with what was needed to fulfill our client/s brief

converting it from house to home and making what was work even harder on its pocket handkerchief site, always sympathetic to the original

the design consists of numerous interventions to resolve a set of specific structural concerns

these included remedying the galvanic corrosion of one metal to the other, so as to ensure the longevity of the exterior, resolving issues with water generally including pumps and irrigation of the garden beds

<img width="2000" height="2993" width_o="2000" height_o="2993" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/aa2e33dd3a91dfd513d28124c1be4043ea93560d90bffaaad4be0c74b0b18662/00_lucky_multiplicity_EmmaCrossPhotographer-copy.jpg" data-mid="137283346" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/aa2e33dd3a91dfd513d28124c1be4043ea93560d90bffaaad4be0c74b0b18662/00_lucky_multiplicity_EmmaCrossPhotographer-copy.jpg" />

as well as to screen windows for security and sun protection and replant appropriately&nbsp;

<img width="2000" height="2983" width_o="2000" height_o="2983" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/9f488d3424b6dbe8c078d1e192f272ff32396a87f595b14d8b3e47d639c3e3e7/01_lucky_multiplicity_EmmaCrossPhotographer.jpg-copy.jpg" data-mid="137283387" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/9f488d3424b6dbe8c078d1e192f272ff32396a87f595b14d8b3e47d639c3e3e7/01_lucky_multiplicity_EmmaCrossPhotographer.jpg-copy.jpg" />

there was little in terms of an interior to be found and what was there was badly resolved, spatially challenged, poorly executed and certainly not commensurate with the quality of the original concept for the house

<img width="2000" height="1335" width_o="2000" height_o="1335" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/4311b5fb26b72a8b8e177a6bf51feac397ab968f2f4098574c22857dc47d772b/05_lucky_multiplicity_EmmaCrossPhotographer.jpg-copy.jpg" data-mid="137283468" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/4311b5fb26b72a8b8e177a6bf51feac397ab968f2f4098574c22857dc47d772b/05_lucky_multiplicity_EmmaCrossPhotographer.jpg-copy.jpg" />
<img width="2000" height="2927" width_o="2000" height_o="2927" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/ea4db644faae2a2ae31c7e3d633470c690b021fce3c21dc7ffb5dfd977e176c4/06_lucky_multiplicity_EmmaCrossPhotographer.jpg-copy.jpg" data-mid="137283484" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/ea4db644faae2a2ae31c7e3d633470c690b021fce3c21dc7ffb5dfd977e176c4/06_lucky_multiplicity_EmmaCrossPhotographer.jpg-copy.jpg" />

the built form strikes a well-recognised silhouette in the streetscape &nbsp;-&nbsp;we were intent to not mar that reading of the building in respect to both the original architect’s design, as well as to our clients’ aspirations for living within a building alive with greenery

<img width="2000" height="1343" width_o="2000" height_o="1343" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/368a6fc17dc17d8bfbdf0a6e8fa8b3d89d70f2b9b56b95323dc1bd29e19f332f/02_lucky_multiplicity_EmmaCrossPhotographer.jpg-copy.jpg" data-mid="137283416" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/368a6fc17dc17d8bfbdf0a6e8fa8b3d89d70f2b9b56b95323dc1bd29e19f332f/02_lucky_multiplicity_EmmaCrossPhotographer.jpg-copy.jpg" />

our interventions were, we hope, respectful and while important to give the building longevity they sit comfortably beside the original form

remedial work, sun shading, security screens, fully opening windows, new front entry, sliding door pockets, external storage, irrigation, replanting – all enable the building to function better, while the form itself determined the interior

<img width="2000" height="2981" width_o="2000" height_o="2981" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/0e8f030dc25fac97e47f2e6345d624486b5105241e8f295f8e4193d06605b554/03_lucky_multiplicity_EmmaCrossPhotographer.jpg-copy.jpg" data-mid="137283414" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/0e8f030dc25fac97e47f2e6345d624486b5105241e8f295f8e4193d06605b554/03_lucky_multiplicity_EmmaCrossPhotographer.jpg-copy.jpg" />

over and above remedial works to the façade, our clients identified various functional concerns which precluded them from comfortably occupying the space on what was to be an intermittent/short term basis

principal to this was lack of security at street level, lack of functional storage or any storage for that matter, and generally wasted, ill-conceived spaces within such a small footprint

<img width="2000" height="1338" width_o="2000" height_o="1338" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/f0f8efa07366e4650c659f99e2d71e756d85901d6c6c5d3f3ea747d15d7e29e3/13_lucky_multiplicity_EmmaCrossPhotographer.jpg-copy.jpg" data-mid="137283314" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/f0f8efa07366e4650c659f99e2d71e756d85901d6c6c5d3f3ea747d15d7e29e3/13_lucky_multiplicity_EmmaCrossPhotographer.jpg-copy.jpg" />
additionally the interior, while light filled, had little other charm or character and was at odds with the idea of a greenhouse so well-articulated externally

our role was to marry the two to create a personable home
